1. The 20th Anniversary Of Let’s Talk
The approaching new year (2014) is the 20th Anniversary of Let’s Talk. What once was a newsletter shared in University Of The Arts’ lectures and classes, professional development presentations up and down the east coast, and in book publications for Good Apple Publishing is now a Word Press column that is read across four continents and Philadelphia. Let’s Talk is distributed through multiple relisting sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Mom occasionally reads it at home, also.
Join the year-long celebration of writing and creative discussion by contributing a story, book, movie, art piece, award notice, photography, game, business, multimedia, travel, or theater write-up for the column. Your ideas should be sent to Tom Palumbo at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please send a photo or two with your two-paragraph contribution. Your varied ideas, experiences, and insights will surely bring a larger audience to the column and make the column’s content more interesting and far reaching.
2. Movies…Noah…Russell Crowe Saves The World
As presented in our mission statement, Let’s Talk does not discuss religion, politics, or disparage The Great Pumpkin. The following movie suggestion does not violate that policy.
If Charlton Heston can play Thomas Jefferson, Moses, Ben-Hur, Michelangelo, Marc Anthony, and John The Baptist then Russell Crowe, surely, can play Noah. The previews for Crowe’s upcoming apocalyptic movie of the great flood are captivating and bring a dinner table worth of questions to the forefront. They key question posed was what about the area’s inhabitants. They laughed at first, but then the rains came. What happened next is the key to this newly fashioned epic.
Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Jennifer Connelly (Mulholland Falls), and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) comprise Noah’s family and join him in the fight to follow his charge, build the ark, collect the animals, and fight off the locals. The movie is an action adventure with just as much fighting as saving! Very unusual!
The big dinner question was how can this tremendous ark while being built in Brooklyn collect two of every species of the world’s creature inhabitants?
In the movie, it seems that his Internet message brought every animal to the ark rather than through his search and collection methods. The far corners of the existing world at that time were just as expansive as they are now! Russell Crowe really had remarkable sorting, collecting, and acting skills that he used in this movie!
3. Music…Teardrops On My Guitar…Taylor Swift
Music…Tears On My Pillow…Little Anthony
Analysis and evaluation are two of the top critical thinking skills presented in classroom and business programs. Using the top recording stars to initiate these two skills will enrich any level classroom.
Here is a teaching format that you can use with any singer, or group, and their songbook. Every student will pick his or her favorite singer or group to research and then present in a reporting structure similar to the one presented below with Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift has 62 song videos on You Tube. Her songs always seem to tell heartfelt stories that every teen has experienced. The country song mantra of “three chords and the truth” rings true in all Swift’s music. Taylor’s first two songs Tim McGraw and Teardrops On My Guitar (54 million hits) featured in her first album Taylor Swift give insights into her teen years and early recording days. Take another artist that sings about tears and compare their message to Taylor’s message. Little Anthony and The Imperials might be a good start if a song doesn’t immediately come to mind. How does the story told in Tears On My Pillow compare to Teardrops On My Guitar. As both artists got older how did their song themes change? How would you rate their videos?
4. Movies II…The Monuments Men…George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Bill Murray Rescue The World’s Great Art.
Walt Disney fans are looking forward to Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson’s presentation of the story of how Mary Poppins made it to the movie screen. Usually movies have different trailers. This movie seems to only have one which is seen everywhere you go as you visit your local movie or view your favorite television show.
Art lovers are looking forward to The Monuments Men and what pieces of Europe’s great art will make it into the war movie. George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Bill Murray head a team of soldiers that is trying to save Europe’s art from the Nazis as the Germans try to both horde and hide this art or destroy it. In real life the monument men rescued five million pieces of art. A large number of these art treasures were traced and recorded by the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art. This foundation has been lobbying for the President’s Gold Medal for these war heroes. The movie might give this movement added momentum.
5. Music II…The Sound Of Music Was 18 Million Viewers Strong
Carrie Underwood was outstanding in The Sound Of Music. The live stage version of ‘Music’ filled households with a familiar story they could experience for the first time, or re-live, and enjoy. The viewing numbers topped everything out the last eight years. The seeing if Carrie Underwood is the new Julie Andrews comparison was not fair. However, putting Underwood under this microscope was a big draw for the show.
The big discussion now is what musical should be presented next in this live mode and who should star in the production. The next musical would have to be a show that large numbers of viewers know. Naturally, there would have to be star power to generate that needed pre-show buzz. Our selection is Grease starring Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. The secondary roles could be filled with a ‘who is who’ in music, also. 20 million critics alone would tune in hoping Britney would stumble. She will prove everyone wrong just as Carrie Underwood did!
6. Community Service…Your Holiday Donation
Money once again is tight this holiday season. Holiday donations were way off last year. If things are tight, hopefully, it is in your clothing. Three organizations will gladly take anything clothing wise that doesn’t fit. Purple Heart will pick up the clothes at your door and distribute them to children and the aged. The Abused Women’s Shelter in your neighborhood could use clothing for the many women that flee abuse with just the clothes on their back. Many Nearly New Shops support the homeless and your local hospitals children’s ward. Instead of putting your clothes profits back in your pocket, please donate it back to the shop. They, then, donate the money to local charities listed in their brochure.
7. David Statham Is An Action Hero!
Homefront Is An Action Movie!
David Statham has destroyed the opposition from bank robbers to illegal transporters to drug smugglers in his last ten movies. Why would anyone, then, after seeing his name in the credits for Homefront want to harm Statham’s movie daughter. As soon as Kate Bosworth, Winona Rider, or James Franco (the baddies) approached his daughter, you could hear the whole theater say: “don’t do that” in unison. Despite this uproar, the threesome seemed indifferent to everyone’s warning.
Sylvester Stallone who wrote the screenplay would have been the ideal soothsayer…if they listened to him, there would not be a movie or any of Statham’s fast paced beat-downs.
Izabela Vidovic plays Statham’s fiery ten-year-old daughter. After her mother’s death Statham moves her from the city to what he thinks is the quiet country. After ten movies, filled with countless disappointments, he should have known better! His daughter’s altercation in school with the school bully brings James Franco, the region’s drug king, in to settle the dispute. Escalation, like Grease, is the word! You had to be there to understand that last sentence. The movie welcomes Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth back to the silver screen. They were good at bad while taking drugs and arranging bad beats. Transporter 1’s story is still the best in Statham’s flicks!
